Reflections is based on scenes of the Ounavarra river as it passes through Courtown Woods. This is the same area that my Ounavarra Winter series comes from. However this series is taken from summer time to capture the dramatic lighting and blue skies of summer days, and the bright greens and yellows of the forest.
Water has always played a big part in my art. I love the fluid shapes created by light on the surface of the water. It is from here that Reflections gets its name. While some pictures are recognisable river scenes, others are simply explorations of small reflections on the water surface.
Contrast is very important in these paintings. I have tried to combine extremes of dark and light to create more striking images. A range of vibrant colours and shadows give the paintings a sense of life and energy, while placing thick lumps of paint beside almost bare canvas gives depth.
